Brief history on the benefits of massage therapy
Want to learn about the history of massage?
It's been around since the beginning of time. People have always instinctively rubbed their sore spots and even used it to aid digestion.
The oldest written record of massage is from 1800 BC in China, and it was all about the therapeutic power of touch. Fast forward to ancient Greece and you've got Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, talking about how massage can loosen or tighten muscles and even make them grow. And did you know that in Roman times, a physician named Galen used massage to treat injuries and diseases? But then it fell out of favor in Europe until it was brought back in the 19th century by a guy named Ling, who developed some famous massage techniques that you may have heard of, like effleurage and petrissage. And finally, it was Dr. Johann Georg Mezger who gave these techniques their fancy French names and was the first person to get professional recognition for massage therapy.
Massage techniques have a long history dating back to ancient civilizations around the world. The ancient Greeks and Romans used massage for both medicinal and recreational purposes, and it has been practiced in many cultures for centuries. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, massage became more widely recognized as a form of therapy, and various techniques and approaches to massage were developed.
Phew, that was a lot of history!
But isn't it cool to see how long people have been using massage for all sorts of benefits?
Massage Benefits
Today, there are many different types of massage, each with its own unique set of techniques and benefits.
Thai massage and Balinese massage are two massage techniques that have a long history and are native to Southeast Asia. Thai massage, also known as "Thai yoga massage," is a form of bodywork that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga poses. It is typically performed on a mat on the floor, and the therapist uses their hands, knees, legs, and feet to move the client into a series of stretches and yoga-like positions. Balinese massage, on the other hand, is a type of massage that combines elements of Indonesian, Indian, and Chinese massage techniques. It typically involves the use of long strokes, skin rolling, and acupressure to stimulate the circulation and relax the muscles.
There are many potential benefits to receiving a massage, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved circulation, and relief from muscle tension and pain. Massage can also help to improve sleep, boost the immune system, and promote a sense of relaxation and well-being.
